Al Ahli Crowned Champions of Inaugural AFC Champions League Elite After 2-0 Win Over Kawasaki

Saudi Arabian giants Al Ahli triumphed 2-0 over Japan’s Kawasaki Frontale to win the inaugural AFC Champions League Elite final on Saturday night in Jeddah.

Galeno lit up the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium with a spectacular 35th-minute strike before Franck Kessie doubled the lead just seven minutes later, capitalizing on a defensive lapse during a brief Kawasaki injury spell. The match drew an electrifying crowd of 60,000, overwhelmingly backing the star-studded Saudi side.

Despite the loss, Kawasaki impressed throughout the tournament, defeating Al Sadd and Cristiano Ronaldo's Al Nassr on short rest. Manager Shigetoshi Hasebe expressed pride in his team's resilience but admitted frustration at falling just short.

“We have to reflect and grow from this. The support from our fans was incredible, and we wanted to bring the trophy home for them,” said Hasebe.

Al Ahli's victory, powered by marquee names like Edouard Mendy, Riyad Mahrez, Roberto Firmino, and Kessie, highlights Saudi Arabia's growing influence in Asian football.

The AFC has confirmed that Saudi Arabia will continue hosting the tournament finals through the 2028-29 season, ensuring more high-stakes football in the kingdom for years to come.
