Atletico Madrid defeated Botafogo by a slim margin of 1-0 thanks to a spectacular late strike from Antoine Griezmann. Atletico lost in the Club World Cup group stage, but the victory wasn't enough to keep the Spanish powerhouses in the competition.

In the second Group B match earlier in the day, Paris Saint-Germain defeated the Seattle Sounders 2-0. Due to better tiebreakers, the French champions and the Brazilian team advanced, leaving PSG, Botafogo, and Atletico Madrid tied in a three-way match on six points.

Brazil's Botafogo came in second place and earned a trip to the round of 16, while Paris Saint-Germain secured the top spot in Group B by defeating their opponents on goal differential.

Despite winning the final game, Atletico Madrid finished third and was eliminated along with the Seattle Sounders, who had three games played and were winless and pointless at the end of the season.

In order to continue their unexpected run, Botafogo will play the Group A winners on Saturday, while PSG will face the Group A runners-up in Sunday's knockout match.

It's interesting to note that Botafogo knew going into their last group game that they would advance even if they lost by just two goals. Igor Jesus and Jefferson Savarino, however, chose to surge forward with purpose rather than play it safe, forcing Atletico goalie Jan Oblak to make two incredible saves that kept the game tense until the very end.

In a tight and strategic match, Botafogo held their own after shockingly defeating Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain 1-0. Atletico Madrid dominated the pace and had much of the ball, but their possession rarely resulted in real danger for goalie John, who was mostly unaffected by a well-behaved defense.

Despite being well restrained, the match almost boiled over in the end. After Gregory seemed to stamp on Julián Álvarez's foot inside the area, Atlético claimed a penalty, which sparked protests from both players and supporters.

Referee César Ramos, however, dismissed the accusations during a protracted VAR review, pointing to an earlier violation committed by Alexander Sørloth of Atletico in the buildup. This effectively revoked the penalty appeal and diffused the dispute.

Diego Simeone, the manager of Atletico, became enraged by the decision and lost control of his temper. He stormed onto the field at halftime to confront Mexican referee César Ramos in a furious altercation that highlighted the tense situation.

They put everything forward as time was running out and Atlético was chasing the unlikely—three goals were required to keep their tournament chances alive. Then a flash of insight appeared. A well-taken goal that raised spirits but eventually ring hollow came in the 87th minute when substitute Antoine Griezmann rifled home from within the box. It may have cost Botafogo the opportunity to win the group, but it did little to improve Atlético's lot and instead gave the trophy to Paris Saint-Germain.
