The Dutchman held off fellow countrymen Olav Kooij and Maikel Zijlaard in a mad dash to the finish line in Lecce to secure a well-deserved victory on stage four. The final scene was tumultuous, erratic, and exhilarating.

Mads Pedersen crossed the finish line in fourth place, having already won two stages in this edition after winning on stages one and three. The Dane keeps the coveted pink jersey even though he didn't place on the podium this time.

"I know I have a good long sprint, so I went for it and hoped for the best. I didn't have to take any wind until 200m to go.,”  said Van Uden  "I didn't do it alone. I did it with the whole team.”
