Japan’s tourism industry reached a new milestone in May 2025, as foreign visitor numbers surged to 3.7 million, an impressive 21.5% increase compared to the same month in 2024, according to government estimates released Wednesday. This marks a record high for the month, reflecting the continued recovery and strong demand for travel to Japan, even after the peak cherry blossom season.
South Korea led the charge as the top source of foreign visitors, with 825,800 travelers arriving, marking an 11.8% increase from last year. Close behind was China, which saw 789,900 visitors—a substantial 44.8% year-on-year rise. The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) reported that these two countries, along with 19 other markets, contributed to the record-breaking performance.
The strong influx of visitors has been a boon for Japan’s economy, particularly in its tourism and hospitality sectors. The bustling streets of Tokyo, including famous destinations like Takeshita Street in Harajuku, have become a symbol of the thriving tourism industry. Foreign tourists continue to flock to popular areas, drawn by Japan’s rich culture, modern attractions, and iconic landmarks.
Despite the cherry blossom season, typically a peak period for tourism, foreign interest in Japan remains robust throughout the year, underscoring the country’s global appeal. This trend is expected to continue, with many tourists from South Korea, China, and other regions looking forward to the upcoming summer months.
The rise in visitor numbers has also helped rejuvenate Japan’s retail, hospitality, and transportation sectors, further supporting the country’s post-pandemic economic recovery.
