G7 Strengthens Critical Minerals Cooperation to Reduce Dependence on China

G7 Strengthens Critical Minerals Cooperation to Reduce Dependence on China

At the G7 summit in Kananaskis, Canada, leaders from the world's leading democracies have launched a comprehensive action plan aimed at mitigating risks associated with overdependence on China for critical minerals. This new strategy seeks to bolster economic security by enhancing cooperation on mineral supply chains, with a particular focus on rare earth elements vital for modern technology.

The plan outlines multiple areas for cooperation among G7 nations, including monitoring mineral shortages, responding to market disruptions, and diversifying supply sources through responsible mining and recycling practices. This comes as China remains the dominant global supplier of rare earths and other key minerals, with a history of leveraging export controls as geopolitical tools.

In a statement following the summit, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized the importance of fostering "constructive and stable" relations with China, urging Beijing to avoid practices that distort global markets. He also highlighted the G7’s commitment to advancing a "standards-based" market for critical minerals, one that fully accounts for the environmental and economic costs of extraction and trade.

Despite the absence of U.S. President Donald Trump, who departed early from the summit, the leaders underscored their shared commitment to securing supply chains, with Japan's Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba stressing the significance of G7 engagement in the Indo-Pacific region. The group also pledged to collaborate on more sustainable investments in critical minerals projects.

While the G7 refrained from issuing a joint statement at the conclusion of the summit, they did endorse several "action-oriented" papers, covering topics such as artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, and the fight against transnational repression. The summit's discussions also centered on ongoing global crises, including Russia's ongoing aggression in Ukraine and escalating tensions in the Middle East.
