In a thrilling victory, Japanese boxing sensation Naoya Inoue maintained his perfect record and his unchallenged super bantamweight world title by defeating heavy underdog Ramon Cardenas in the eighth round on Saturday night in Las Vegas after a rare knockdown.

Referee Thomas Taylor entered the ring barely 45 seconds into the eighth, ending a furious round of heavy blows and giving Inoue his 27th stoppage victory, 30-0. Cardenas was pinned against the ropes and only provided a protective shell, thus the champion ended the match in a commanding manner.

“Watching the fight, everybody is very much aware I like to brawl,” Inoue said via translator, “I was very surprised but I was able to calmly pull myself together.”

“In the first round, I thought I had pretty good distance but in the second round it kind of got a little loose. And then from then thereafter I made sure I didn’t take that punch again.”

In the second round, big underdog Ramon Cardenas looped his left hand and caught Naoya Inoue clean, leaving him stunned for just the second bout in his legendary career. In the third, Cardenas maintained his composure in the face of Inoue's piercing punches, throwing a powerful left that knocked the champion backward before landing a cutting right.

A brawl broke out during the fourth round. In a crowd-pleasing fight, Inoue cornered Cardenas in a corner and unleashed a powerful assault, but the underdog slipped out and responded with his own fury.

As the round ended with the bell ringing overhead, the American, reeling and unable to maintain his balance, sank into a squat and was forced into a knockout position.

The eighth followed. Less than a minute later, Cardenas was stunned, his back against the ropes, his eyes looking for support as Inoue exploded with a tremendous right hand. Referee Thomas Taylor stepped in between them, signaling the conclusion of the bout and protecting Cardenas from more harm because the challenger was obviously out of his feet and unable to defend himself.
