Jo Shimoda will captain Team Japan at the 2025 Motocross of Nations (MXoN), taking place from October 3 to 5 at Ironman Raceway in Crawfordsville, Indiana — a significant and high-stakes return of this prestigious international event to the United States.
This year, Shimoda will compete in the elite MXGP class, stepping up from his role in the 2022 MXoN, where he raced in the MX2 division and assisted Japan to a 24th-place finish.
Yuki Okura, his teammate from the 2022 outing, rejoins him on the squad and will compete in the Open class, while rising talent Soya Nakajima rounds out the lineup in the MX2 category.
Shimoda kicked off the 2024 Pro Motocross season with impressive performances, achieving two consecutive second-place overall finishes in the opening rounds due to consistent runner-up positions in all four motos. His momentum, however, has decelerated; since that time, he has not reached the podium, with his best moto finish being fourth at Thunder Valley MX Park in Colorado. His last two National races saw him finish sixth overall — respectable, but shy of his early-season form.
Shimoda’s blazing beginning to the season has ensured his position in the title race, as he occupies second place in the 250 championship standings. While he has demonstrated moments of brilliance, he is still 42 points behind the current leader, Haiden Deegan — a gap that allows for little error as the season progresses.
