Lewis Hamilton Sets the Pace in Opening Las Vegas Grand Prix Practice

George Russell posted a great time at the end of the session with Hamilton posting a lap 0.396 seconds faster than Russell. It is important to note that both drivers of Mercedes continually upped the pace throughout this hour’s run.

The third quickest time was provided by McLaren’s Lando Norris who is not giving up on his slim chances of clinping the champion’s crown. The current race leader, Max Verstappen, was fifth and only a few dozen seconds behind Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. Verstappen is now ahead of Norris by a 62-point margin, and there are only three races left in the competition; Verstappen needs to finish higher than Norris and only needs two points in that case to garner his fourth title.

Initially, drivers were dealing with rather limited grip, administering a cleanup of the desert for the year’s duration as they went around the track, leaving clouds of dust in their wake. The tough weather ensured precision was needed but no serious problems occurred despite several cars drifting into the run-off at Turn 14, the final corner at the end of the famous Strip.

Behind the wheel of the second Ferrari, Carlos Sainz outpaced Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin with the sixth best time. Sergio Perez for Red Bull, Pierre Gasly for Alpine, and rookie of the year Oscar Piastri for McLaren also made the top ten finish list. All three drivers were rough on the course but kept themselves measured by the dust.

While the workers were sweeping out the desert rubbish accumulated in a year’s time, drivers had an unsteady track to contend with to start with, launching clouds of dust in their wake. Several cars ran to the run-off area at turn 14, a tough corner at the end of the famous Strip, but the race continued on smoothly despite the challenges Cautious driving and the high levels of precision were tested by the dicy conditions at turn 14.

Carlos Sainz driving at the second Ferrari was faster than Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin and recorded the sixth best time. Getting ahead of themselves, Sainz and co-driver Mikko were the first to fall behind, while Red Bull’s Sergio Perez, McLaren rookie Oscar Piastri and Alpine’s Pierre Gasly joined the list of top ten finishers who dealt with the dusty course, with occasional aggression, occasionally caution.
