Japanese boxing star Naoya “Monster” Inoue, the undisputed super bantamweight world champion, expressed confidence and improved readiness for his upcoming title defense against Australian challenger Sam Goodman. Originally scheduled for Christmas Eve in Tokyo, the match was postponed to January 24 after Goodman suffered a cut above his left eye during sparring.
Speaking to the media on January 8, Inoue shared how the delay had benefited his preparation. “I’m in the best shape now,” the 31-year-old said. “The postponement by a month has helped me get my feel and focus right.”
Initially surprised by the news of the fight’s postponement just 10 days before the scheduled date, Inoue quickly adjusted. “I was surprised because it was so close to the fight. But I knew I could focus on the next step, whether the bout was postponed or canceled,” he explained.
Boasting an impressive record of 28-0, including 25 knockouts, Inoue has maintained his training intensity and weight since the postponement. When asked about exploiting Goodman’s injury, Inoue responded strategically, “It’s a fight, so it’s natural to do that. That’s a big weak point for him and can be my key to victory.”
