The latest WTA World Rankings for women’s tennis, updated on January 6th, see Naomi Osaka rise seven spots to rank 50th globally, marking her return to the Top 50 for the first time in two years. Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam champion and former world No. 1, reached the final of the ASB Classic in Auckland, New Zealand, following an impressive run of four consecutive match wins.
In the final, Osaka faced Denmark’s Clara Tauson. Despite winning the first set 6-4, she was forced to withdraw before the second set due to abdominal pain, finishing as the tournament’s runner-up. This marked Osaka’s first final appearance since March 2022 and her first since giving birth to her daughter in 2023.
Her steady climb in rankings reflects her determination and resilience, starting last year with no ranking points and rising to 57th by the end of the 2024 season.
Among other Japanese players, Moeka Uchijima holds the second-highest Japanese ranking at 63rd, while Aoi Ito has climbed 17 places to 109th after winning the Workday Canberra International. Both players are making strides toward breaking into higher tiers of competition.
