Shohei Ohtani showcased his unmatched two-way talent in the Los Angeles Dodgers' thrilling 13-7 comeback victory over the Washington Nationals at Dodger Stadium on Sunday. The Japanese phenom delivered a flawless shutout inning, striking out two batters on just 18 pitches, a significant step forward in his recovery from right elbow surgery.
"I think I managed to pitch more relaxed than last time," Ohtani said after the game. "You are seen as a starter once you can throw more than five innings. I hope to keep making progress even if it's bit by bit."
At the plate, Ohtani was equally spectacular. After walking and scoring on Max Muncy’s grand slam in the sixth, Ohtani added a bases-clearing triple in the seventh, extending the Dodgers’ lead to 7-3. In the eighth, he launched a two-run home run, his 26th of the season, to cap his stellar offensive outing and end a seven-game home run drought.
"I'm coming back faster than I was expecting," Ohtani added. "My confidence is growing that I can get back to a condition even better than before the surgery."
Ohtani’s performance highlighted the Dodgers’ impressive comeback from a 3-1 deficit. Meanwhile, in Chicago, Seiya Suzuki hit two home runs for the fourth time this season, continuing his stellar play for the Cubs despite their 14-6 loss to the Seattle Mariners.
