Following their historic Champions League victory, Paris Saint-Germain crushed Atletico Madrid 4-0 at the Rose Bowl on Sunday to start their Club World Cup campaign. PSG made a strong statement to the rest of the competition with this dominant performance: they are the team to beat, not simply a competitor.

Only weeks after crushing Inter Milan 5-0 in the Champions League final, the French powerhouses brought that momentum to Pasadena, setting the tempo and taking charge right away.

The foundation for a dominant Paris Saint-Germain performance was laid by goals from Fabian Ruiz and Vitinha in the first half. Senny Mayulu and Lee Kang-in took advantage of PSG's momentum after the interval to help them defeat a weak Atletico Madrid 4-0 in their Group B match.

Clément Lenglet's dismissal after receiving his second yellow card in the 78th minute capped off a dreary afternoon that left Diego Simeone fuming, his rage directed directly at the referees and his team's expensive mistakes.

Minutes later, the mayhem persisted. Simeone fell to his knees in shock when Alexander Sørloth missed an open goal despite having a fantastic opportunity to pull one back.

PSG capitalized right away. In the 87th minute, Senny Mayulu completed a smooth play to make it 3-0 and seal the victory. Then, after Robin Le Normand was given a penalty for a handball in the area, Lee Kang-in stepped up and calmly slotted in a penalty with what was essentially the final kick of the game.

“We did a very good game, it is difficult with this temperature. We did well against a tough team, we controlled all of the game. We are happy with the result,” Vitinha said.

“The toughest thing to do in football is to maintain the level, and that is what I try to do.”
