The Best Times to See Autumn Leaves in Japan for 2024: Official Forecast

As the vibrant colors of autumn approach, nature enthusiasts and travelers are eagerly anticipating the stunning displays of foliage across Japan. According to the latest forecast from the Japan Meteorological Corporation, the 2024 autumn leaves season may be slightly delayed due to above-average temperatures. Here’s a detailed look at the best times and locations to experience this breathtaking transformation.

The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that warmer temperatures experienced in late summer are likely to push back the peak of autumn colors by several days to over a week compared to previous years. While the initial forecast is now available, an updated assessment is expected by late October, which could further refine these timings.

Key Locations and Timing

Hokkaido

The northernmost region of Japan will see the earliest color changes. In Sapporo, the vibrant red momiji leaves are predicted to reach their peak around November 7, which is about nine days later than usual.

Nagano and Kanazawa

In Nagano, the red leaves are expected to be at their best around November 25, while Kanazawa will see similar hues on December 1.

Tokyo and Osaka

In the bustling metropolis of Tokyo, the momiji leaves will likely turn full red by December 1, with Osaka following closely behind on December 4. Kyoto's autumn colors are anticipated to peak on December 12.

Kyushu

Further south in Kyushu, Fukuoka's leaves are forecasted to turn red by December 10, and Kagoshima will see their colors around December 15.

Ginkgo Trees

Ginkgo trees, known for their bright yellow leaves, will also follow a delayed schedule. Key timings include:

⚫ Sapporo: November 4
⚫ Aomori: November 7
⚫ Kanazawa: November 12
⚫ Nagano: November 17
⚫ Osaka: November 24
⚫ Tokyo: November 26
