FIFA President Gianni Infantino's hopes of showcasing one of football's most renowned players at the international competition are in jeopardy as Cristiano Ronaldo has all but ruled out participating in the 2018 Club World Cup.
The Portuguese superstar said in a statement on Saturday that he has had "quite a few" offers from clubs interested in hiring him for the June 14 start date. Ronaldo made it plain that he would not be playing despite the interest, resolutely rejecting any offers.
“This is irrelevant right now,” Ronaldo said when first asked about the FIFA Club World Cup. “It makes no sense to talk about anything other than the national team.”
Ronaldo spoke to the media in Munich the night before Portugal's historic and highly anticipated battle with Spain in the UEFA Nations League final.
In Wednesday's tense 2-1 semifinal victory over Germany, the 40-year-old icon scored his 137th goal for his country, marking yet another milestone in his illustrious career and securing Portugal's trip to the final.
“Some things make sense to talk about, other things don’t, and, as a person says, you can’t take part in everything,” Ronaldo said.
“You have to think about the short, medium and long term. It’s a decision practically made on my part not to go to the Club World Cup, but I’ve had quite a few invitations to go.”
