Filipina Alex Eala Stuns Madison Keys, Moves One Step Closer to Miami Open Quarterfinals

Filipina Alex Eala Stuns Madison Keys, Moves One Step Closer to Miami Open Quarterfinals

At the Miami Open, Australian Open champion Madison Keys suffered a shocking third-round loss to up-and-coming Filipina player Alexandra Eala, losing 6-4, 6-2. The 19-year-old, who is currently ranked 140th in the world, expertly broke Keys' serve and secured six breaks en route to a decisive victory.

Eala's accomplishment was a historic occasion rather than merely another noteworthy victory. By defeating 2017 French Open champion Jeļena Ostapenko in the previous round, she had already established herself as the first Filipino in tennis history to defeat a player ranked in the top 30. She has now improved on that achievement, winning the Philippines' second victory over a top-30 competitor. More importantly, Eala became the first Filipino player to achieve a top-10 victory since the WTA rankings were created in 1975 after defeating world No. 5 Keys. A critical discovery, and possibly only the start.

“I know and it’s in my mind that I have a next match, but I need to stop, and I need to recognize that what I did today was really amazing. It’s a big thing to take in, and I’m so super proud of what I was able to accomplish, but it definitely fuels me more.”

“I don’t think I’ve had the time to process everything that’s happened, so I’m taking it step by step and just focusing on what I need to do next,” Eala said

Eala, who has been honing her skills at Rafael Nadal's academy since she was 13, is getting ready to face Paula Badosa, the 10th seed, in the round of 16. In a dominant performance, the Spanish contender defeated Denmark's Clara Tauson to guarantee her advancement. Eala has already made her mark on history, but she faces yet another difficult task.

According to an impressive statistic confirmed by the WTA, her three wins at this year's Miami Open surpass the total number of wins by all previous Filipino players during the event's Open Era. The teenage prodigy has long been considered one of tennis' most exciting talents and is a rising star in the sport. She won the US Open girls' singles trophy in 2022 and the French Open and Australian Open doubles titles in 2021 and 2020, respectively.

Another youthful star's amazing progress was stopped somewhere. In an intense three-set encounter, American Amanda Anisimova defeated Mirra Andreeva 7-6(5), 2-6, 6-3, ending Andreeva's remarkable 13-match run.
